Meg Myers- Thank U 4 Taking Me to the Disco

The follow-up to 2018’s quite good “Take Me to the Disco”, this appears to be an EP of sorts, 5 songs. Myers really bears her emotions out in way like, say , Alanis Morissette or Fiona Apple. It wouldn’t be inaccurate to consider her music “emo”. “Any Way You Wanna Love” is the highlight here, making up for the odd second song “Grizzly” in which Myers attempts to see what Depeche Mode might sound like if they were on cocaine. I can really see how someone can either love or hate her music. Regardless, Myers is always entertaining and unpredictable so I will be on the lookout for any of her upcoming releases.

Andrew Bird — My Finest Work Yet

So, the question on everyone’s mind: Is this really Andrew Bird’s finest work yet? Well, I’d have no idea because I’m pretty unfamiliar with the rest of Bird’s discography. But, I suppose it’s the finest work yet I’ve heard from Bird. Andrew Bird is a name I’ve been aware of for a long time, but I couldn’t tell you much about him except that he plays the violin and is “quirky”. I hear a lot of Father John Misty and Josh Ritter here, so if you like those two, this should be right up your alley. Be prepared for an excess of whistling and violin solos. Bird is up there with Jake Smith of The White Buffalo as music’s premier whistler as far as I’m concerned.

The Goo Goo Dolls — A Boy Named Goo

I’ve only just recently discovered that the Goo Goo Dolls wrote songs that were not “Iris”. I mean, if you don’t like Iris, you don’t have a soul. It’s a classic and anyone that questions that should be banished from music. Anyway, I figured that these guys couldn’t have only used all of their special powers on one song, so I’m checking out some of their other material from the mid-90s. Despite the creepy cover (not shown) (is there a rule that every 90’s album has to have a baby on the cover?), this is an enjoyable record. Nothing mind-blowing, no Iris, but some catchy hooks nonetheless.

Pete Yorn — musicforthemorningafter

Wow, how was I not familiar with this guy before? Really good stuff. And he sounds just like Chris Cornell. I mean really, just like him. But not the heavy, brooding, Soundgarden or Audioslave Cornell. This feels like a Cornell solo-record, like a sequel to Cornell’s brilliant “Euphoria Morning”. It’s quite accessible and catchy. “Strange Condition” is outstanding. Definitely gonna have to listen to more of this guy’s discography.
